How to relax when things get tough

3 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress

When life is getting too much and you feel overwhelmed, you might like to try these 3 things to help you get grounded.

Walk it Out.

If life is making you feel on edge, try walking it out. Walking eases tension in muscles, helps arthritis and lifts mood. So try walking more during the day- at lunchtime, after work, around the shops and with your dog- if you have one. Even 10 minutes of extra walking squeezed into a day can help you stress less. A minimum of 30 minutes walking five times a week is the ideal. But we all start from different places - so it's best to build up slowly if you haven’t exercised for a while.

Sip a Herbal Tea

If you've been relying on stimulants to get you through the day, it might be time to reassess. These may make you feel more energetic for a short time but in the long run leave you feeling wired and tired. You could reduce or cut out coffee, alcohol and sweet treats like chocolate, lollies, biscuits and cake. Instead why not try soothing herbal teas like lemon balm, chamomile or peppermint and tasty snacks of fruit and nuts.

Focus on Your Breathe

A simple way to reach instant calm is to focus on your breathing. Sit down - or even better lie down. If you can get outside in nature, this will be even more calming. Now take long, slow, deep breaths until the world seems like a better place. Let all your tension dissolve. Things will get better...
